Entrevistamos a ZIFR y Joey A de ZYNC Records

ZIFR, productor afincado en Pune, y su colaborador británico Joey A hablan sobre colaboraciones familiares, perfeccionismo obsesivo y la creación de música para esos momentos en los que la gente deja de pensar.

Hay un tipo de momento en la pista que ZIFR siempre ha perseguido. No el clímax ni el gran descenso, sino el instante que hay entre ambos. Ese momento en el que la sala entra en sincronía, las bebidas quedan olvidadas y la gente deja de pensar demasiado para simplemente existir junto a la música. Es una sensación difícil de fabricar. Quizá por eso, cuando ZIFR y Joey A se propusieron crear Check the Vibe, no intentaron fabricarla en absoluto.

El EP, Check the Vibe!, un lanzamiento de tres temas de deep minimal house en ZYNC Records, supone la primera colaboración entre ZIFR, productor y DJ afincado en Pune (India), y Joey A, residente en Swindon (Reino Unido). Hablamos con ambos para conocer cómo surgió este proyecto.

La colaboración se presenta como una “family collab”. ¿Qué significa eso en la práctica?

Joey A: Ambos tenemos fortalezas diferentes como productores. Yo me incliné hacia los elementos melódicos, centrándome en los sintetizadores, los acordes y los sonidos que viven en el rango medio, mientras que ZIFR destaca en el ritmo, el trabajo con samples y las mezclas. El resultado fue una auténtica fusión de nuestros dos estilos.

ZIFR: Joey se encargó de forma natural de la parte melódica: los sintetizadores, los acordes y los elementos situados en las frecuencias medias. Mis puntos fuertes están más relacionados con la parte rítmica y técnica: la relación entre bombo y bajo, la percusión, los elementos superiores y todo el proceso de mezcla y masterización. La división del trabajo fue muy natural y sin invadir el espacio creativo del otro. Nadie intentó imponerse, y creo que precisamente por eso funcionó tan bien.

¿El EP surgió rápidamente o fue un proceso de pulir detalles con el tiempo?

Joey A: Las bases de los temas surgieron rápido, pero nos tomamos nuestro tiempo para perfeccionar los pequeños detalles y asegurarnos de que cada canción tuviera su propia personalidad.

ZIFR: Las ideas principales aparecieron bastante rápido, pero sí que dedicamos mucho tiempo a perfeccionarlas y ponerlas a prueba. Joey hizo pruebas escuchando los temas en el coche y yo los testé en diferentes dispositivos y entornos. A veces una canción suena increíble en el estudio pero cuenta una historia completamente distinta fuera de él, así que seguimos revisándolo todo hasta que funcionara correctamente en cualquier contexto.

¿Qué hace que una canción sea atemporal, especialmente en espacios como el deep tech y el minimal, donde las tendencias cambian tan rápido?

Joey A: Para mí, una canción atemporal tiene un groove que puedes escuchar durante horas sin cansarte, con cambios sutiles y detalles intrincados que te mantienen conectado. Es difícil de conseguir, pero cuando lo logras, esos temas resisten el paso del tiempo.

ZIFR: Para mí, la música atemporal nunca se esfuerza demasiado por impresionar. Tiene personalidad y un groove que se siente natural. Las tendencias van y vienen, pero los discos que generan una emoción y transportan mentalmente a las personas suelen sobrevivir mucho más tiempo.

¿En qué tipo de entorno imagináis este EP sonando?

Joey A: Creo que estos temas funcionan tanto en un club íntimo como en una terraza al atardecer, que es precisamente donde espero poder pincharlos.

ZIFR: Me los imagino sonando en esos momentos en los que la gente ya está completamente conectada: clubes íntimos, espacios after-hours, terrazas al atardecer o incluso al amanecer. Esos momentos en los que la gente deja de pensar demasiado y simplemente existe junto a la música.

¿Cómo mantenéis interesante una música basada en el groove sin sobrecargar los arreglos?

Joey A: Mediante cambios sutiles en el volumen de distintos elementos, automatizaciones de efectos y filtros, siendo muy meticuloso con la colocación de los sonidos dentro de la rejilla, utilizando swing y asegurándome de que siempre haya pequeñas variaciones. Todo eso combinado mantiene vivo el groove.

ZIFR: Para mí, menos siempre es más. A veces silenciar un elemento aporta más que añadir tres nuevos. Pequeños movimientos, tensiones y detalles mínimos pueden transformar por completo la sensación de un groove sin que llegue a sentirse recargado.

¿Qué plugin o herramienta de estudio exprimisteis al máximo en este proyecto?

Joey A: Utilizamos muchísimo el Prophet 5V para los acordes y las atmósferas generales del EP, y el Oxford Inflator trabajó sin descanso.

ZIFR: Sin duda, el Oxford Inflator echó horas extra. Como yo me encargaba de la mezcla, también abusé bastante del FabFilter Pro-Q3 para moldear y limpiar el sonido. Nada especialmente extravagante, simplemente herramientas haciendo bien su trabajo.

¿Cuál fue la primera cosa en la que ambos estuvisteis de acuerdo desde el principio?

Joey A: Que cada tema debía tener una identidad coherente para que pudieran sonar juntos o, al menos, dentro de la misma sesión de DJ.

ZIFR: Ambos coincidimos en que las canciones necesitaban espacio para respirar. Sin capas innecesarias, sin forzar nada; simplemente dejando que el groove hiciera el trabajo.

Joey A: Atmosférico. Guiado por el groove. Vibrante.

We interviewed ZIFR & Joey A from ZYNC Records

ZIFR, The Pune-based producer and his UK collaborator Joey A talk family collabs, obsessive refinement, and making music for the moments when people stop thinking.

There’s a particular kind of club moment that ZIFR has always chased. Not the peak, not the drop in-between. The moment when the room locks in, drinks are forgotten, and people stop thinking too much and just exist with the music. It’s a feeling that’s hard to engineer. Which is perhaps why, when ZIFR and Joey A set out to make Check the Vibe, they didn’t try to engineer it at all.

The EP, Check the Vibe! a three-track deep minimal house release on ZYNC Records is the debut collaboration between ZIFR, a producer and DJ based in Pune, India, and Joey A, based in Swindon, UK. We caught up with both to talk about how it came together.

The collaboration is billed as a «family collab.» What does that mean in practice?

Joey A: We both have different strengths as producers. I leaned toward the melodic elements, focusing on synth work, chords and different sounds that live in the mid range, whilst ZIFR is strong at rhythm, sampling, and mix downs. The results were a true blend of both of our styles.

ZIFR: Joey naturally handled the melodic side of things, the synth work, chords and elements living in the mids. My strengths are more on the rhythmic and technical side: kick and bass relationship, drums, tops, and the overall mix and master process. We had a very natural division without stepping into each other’s space. Nobody overpowered anyone, and I think that’s exactly why it worked.

Did the EP come together quickly, or was it a process of refining details over time?

Joey A: The fundamentals for the tracks came quickly, but we took our time in refining the smaller details to make sure each track has its own character.

ZIFR: The core ideas actually came together quite quickly, but we definitely took our sweet time refining things and testing them. Joey did car testing on his side and I tested across different devices and environments on mine. Sometimes tracks sound great in the studio but tell a completely different story outside of it, so we kept revisiting things until everything translated properly.

What makes a track timeless, especially in deep tech and minimal spaces where trends change quickly?

Joey A: For me, a timeless track has a groove that you can listen to on repeat for hours, with subtle changes and intricate details that keep you locked. It’s difficult to achieve, but when you nail it, those tracks stand the test of time.

ZIFR: For me, timeless music is never trying too hard. It has personality and a groove that feels natural. Trends come and go, but records that create a feeling and put people somewhere mentally tend to survive much longer.

What kind of setting do you imagine this EP being played in?

Joey A: I think these tracks can work both in an intimate club setting and also on the terrace at sunset, which is where I’ll hopefully be playing them!

ZIFR: I can imagine this fitting into those moments where people are already locked in intimate clubs, after-hours spaces, terraces around sunset or even early morning. Those moments where people stop thinking too much and just exist with the music.

How do you keep groove-driven music interesting without overcrowding the arrangement?

Joey A: Subtle changes in the volume of different elements, automated FX and filters, being really picky about where the elements are placed on the grid, utilising swing, and making sure things change regularly all of these combine to make the groove interesting.

ZIFR: Less has always been more for me. Sometimes muting one element can do more than adding three new ones. Small movements, tension and little details can completely change how a groove feels without making it feel busy.

A plugin or studio tool you both abused on this project?

Joey A: The Prophet 5V was used a lot on this EP for the chords and general atmos and the Oxford Inflator was hammered!

ZIFR: Oxford Inflator definitely put in overtime. Since I was handling the mixing side, FabFilter Pro-Q3 also got heavily abused for shaping and cleaning things up. Nothing too crazy, just tools doing their job properly.

What’s one thing you both instantly agreed on?

Joey A: Each track had to have a coherent vibe so that they could be played together, or certainly within the same DJ set.

ZIFR: We both agreed that the tracks needed space to breathe. No unnecessary layers, no forcing, just let the groove do the work.

Finally describe the EP in three words.

Joey A: Atmospheric. Groove-Led. Vibey.

ZIFR: Vocal. Groovy. Rolling.
